Why the Number 108 is Auspicious?

The number 108 is considered as the sacred and auspicious number in all religion and Yoga.  What is the true meaning of it all? 



Significance of the Number 108:

  • Lord Krishna had 108 followers in Vrindavan called as gopis or maids

  • All the prayer beads consist of 108 beads to repeat the mantra or slogan.

  • There are 108 styles of meditation

  • In Ayurveda, there are 108 marma points or vital junctions points in our body.

  • In astrology we have 12 houses and 9 planets (12*9=108)

  • In Sanskrit, there are 54 letters mentioned for Shiva and 54 for Shakthi aspect (54+54=108)

  • There are 108 Puranas and 108 Upanishads

  • There are 108 forms of dance in the Indian traditions

  • The 108 Salutations to the Sun is very popular

  • Stonehenge is 108 feet in diameter

  • Mantras Chants are repeated for 108 times

  • In Sri Yantra, each triangle has 108 degrees

  • In Islam, the number 108 is used to refer God

  • There are 108 qualities of praiseworthy soul.

  • The average distance between the sun and moon to Earth is 108 times of its diameter.

  • According to Indian mythology, there are also 4 Yugas

    1. Satya Yuga - consists of 172,800 years (1+7+2+8 = 18 = (1+8 = 9)
    2. Treta Yuga consists of 1296000 years (1+2+9+6 = 18 = (1+8 = 9)
    3. Dwapara Yuga consists of 864000 years (8+4+6) = 18 = (1+8 = 9)
    4. Kaliyuga consists of 432000 years (4+3+2) = 9

    The number 108 or the multiples of 9 represents the indestructible supply of health, wealth, destiny, love, career, happiness and spirituality. It is very logical to consider it a sacred number
